If you just purchased your player, it should have the latest and greatest firmware.  Updates and manuals can be found here if needed.  I hope this helps!

I was wondering how do I connect my USB external drive to the BD Player so that it'd recognize it. I've already dragged the downloaded firmware upgrade file to my USB external drive and plugged it to the USB port on the back of the player. I'm trying to access BD Live from my BDs but everytime it says that I need an upgrade.

Just to clarify, are you having trouble connecting a USB flash drive, or an external hard drive?  If it's a flash drive, unfortunately not all USB memory sticks are compatible with the player.  If you're attempting to connect an external USB hard drive, the player was not designed for that functionality.  If you're attempting to install the latest firmware, an alternative is burning the update file to a CD or DVD.
