Hello goonieboy,

It would help us to know what your current TV and Blu-ray player settings are and how they are connected.  Also, is this happening only with this disk or with others as well?  Is the issue consistent or intermittent?  Any additional details you can provide would be helpful.

Regards,
John

Re: Grainy picture in dark scenes with NS-WBRDVD...

My blu-ray is connected to my LCD with an HDMI,so far this happened to me only with this movie. From what i have read on the net some say its because my sharpeness is too high, that sharpeness on a blu-ray movie should be kept to a minimun, could that be the problem? thanks

Hello goonieboy,

Actually, this can be kind of tricky and there are a couple of things you must check. The first thing, would be to try with another disk, to be sure this is not a movie defect (movies in HD not only enhance details of people, buildings etc. they also enhance impurities in the movie itself). Also check the resolution you are using, this device is capable of 1080p, and if your TV is also compatible with that resolution you may want to try it (again, keep in mind that the higher the resolution the more defects that may appear).  Lastly, set your TV to the correct sharpness and brightness, since increasing them will also create that grainy look.

Thank you,

I just rented the GAMER movie and the picture quality was incredible no grain or any flaws in the video quality. So it must depend on the movie also.

Re: Grainy picture in dark scenes with NS-WBRDVD...

It certainly depends on the movie and the scene. When a DP needs to shoot something in a dark setting, there are a few ways to achieve this.  They can open the aperture, lengthen the exposure OR boost the ISO, or film speed.  Boosting ISO is, essentially, using a film with higher light sensitivity or using equipment which mimics higher film sensitivity.

The caveat is that high ISOs will introduce more film grain to the picture.  Sometimes this is a necessity because of the low light situation.  Sometimes it's a stylistic choice.

I suspect that you were watching a scene where the DP chose a high ISO b/c of the lack of light.  It may have been enhanced by your sharpness settings on your TV.  As noted previously, a hi-def version of the film may enhance the appearance film grain as well.
