NS-WBRDVD HDMI issue

I noticed while watching Scott Pilgrim vs. the World on blu ray last night that at times, there were graphics that were cut off (due being very close to the edge of the screen.)  Curiosity got the best of me, and I scoured the internet looking for possible solutions.  The first item that I came across was overscan, and I spent the better part of an hour working on that, including looking through these forums.

I then realized that that wasn't the true issue.  I have an Insignia 32" 1080p LCD as well, and I discovered through experimenting and through the Insignia forums that the "Normal" aspect ratio setting should automatically switch to the correct ration based on the source material.  For instance, tv would be in 4:3 and a 1080P HDMI source should fill the screen automatically.

The problem I ran into however, was that the blu ray player was not outputting the right signal.  When I first turn the player on, it comes to a blue insignia screen and my TV says "1920X1080", meaning a full, dot for dot, 1:1, 1080P HD picture.  While in normal mode this showed as widescreen.  Then, however, the screen goes black for a short period of time and a little HDMI Connected icon pops up and my TV says "1080 P".  The aspect ratio is switched to 4:3.  I have to switch my TV to wide mode, which was by its nature causing the slight cropping of the image.  (I understand that 1080P should be a full 1920X1080, but in this case, the TV is only displaying full 1920X1080 when it says that, and the TV recognizes that, even in normal mode, it should be displaying widescreen.)

I then tested my theory using my roommate's PS3.  I hooked it up to the same HDMI port with the same cord I had been using with my Insignia player.  I put my tv on normal mode.  Sure enough, when I turned the PS3 on, my TV said "1920X1080" and this never changed.  (Incidentally, the overscan option is also available to turn on or off here, as this is a full 1:1 source, and the only options for aspect ratio are normal and wide, as they should be for an hdmi source; with my blu ray player I could pick any, indicating something is up).  I played the Scott Pilgrim disc, and everything was framed correctly with no cropping. (There was even very slight letterboxing, which I confirmed to be correct.)

My question is:

Is there any way to get my blu ray player to output in the 1920X1080 mode all the time?  I have it set to HDMI auto and widescreen TV for the settings.  If not, is there a firmware update in the works that could fix this?  It's just frustrating to know that to fill the screen I have to put the TV in wide mode which slightly crops the image.  I know it's not the TV or the cord because the PS3 worked like a charm, and I know I have all the settings right on the blu ray player.

What can I do?

Hello kramerica,

Welcome to Community@Insignia™!

Have you tried setting 1080p as a fixed resolution and 16:9 wide as an aspect ratio?

Yeah, I've tried that.  It does the same thing.  I don't know what other settings I could try to tweak either.  It's as if the player is communicating the wrong settings to the TV or something.

Re: NS-WBRDVD HDMI issue

The model number of the TV is NS-L322Q-10A.  The TV and the Blu Ray player were both purchased in Dec. of 2009.

Re: NS-WBRDVD HDMI issue

Hello kramerica,

Have you noticed there are 2 different 16:9 aspect rations available on your player's Display Settings (16:9 Pillarbox  and 16:9 Wide)? Have you tried with both of them?

Re: NS-WBRDVD HDMI issue

Yea I have tried both of them.  I have tried pretty much every setting on both the TV and the BD Player that I thought might work and nothing has fixed the problem, so I'm not sure what I can do.

Re: NS-WBRDVD HDMI issue

Hello kramerica,

Try updating your firmware with this version. If the issue persists, please take the player, along with the receipt of purchase, to the nearest Best Buy store, so a Geek Squad Agent can check on this.
