I purchased this player a few days before Christmas and it has generally worked great. However, lately I have found that the player does not recognize certain DVDs that are inserted into the drive. This evening, I rented a DVD from a Blockbuster Express kiosk and attempted to play it but received "No Disc" no matter what I tried. I did not have any issues inserting the same disc into my laptop. A few days ago, I had a similar problem with the DVD for The Box--same issue, although the player finally recognized the disc after numerous attempts. Lastly, a week ago, I watched half of a DVD called "Grace" without issue. My wife swapped discs so my daughter could watch another film without issue, but upon attempting to reload Grace again, the same issue appeared. I never did finish watching that film.
The fact that I have encountered this issue 3 times within the last week or so, all with new releases, seems to indicate there may be a new problem surfacing based on the way a film is encoded on the DVD. (Just my educated guess, of course)
The latest firmware update was applied within hours of its release (in Feb 2010) and I downloaded the firmware again to USB drive and reapplied the update just to verify this would not correct the issue.\
Is anyone else seeing this problem? Since the player works fine with most discs, and the affected discs are working fine in other players, I believe this is a problem exclusive to Insignia and can probably be corrected via firmware update.

I have the same problem with (it seems) all my DVD's now getting the same error message "NO DISC" - it is loading, loading, loading and then no disc.....they play on my laptop and my regular DVD player but not my WBRDVD. I have tried the factory reset and cleaned the lens....what else could I try? Thanks

I have definitely noticed this issue is getting worse. The unit was "noisy" when loading discs before, but now it almost seems like it is grinding inside. I love the Netflix playback, but I find that I have to eject/load most discs multiple times before the player wants to read it and actually load the content. Once I get the disc to load, if I need to pause the film, there is a good chance that the unit will completely lock up, requiring me to power it off and repeat the process again.
I'm hoping a firmware update is pending that will resolve this issue. If I take this back to Best Buy, will they do an exchange or will I need to wait a few weeks for warranty service?

Hello again altonb1 and welcome jot,
Based on the behavior you're describing, I'd recommend returning to Best Buy (or other place of purchase) for warranty service options. To my understanding, service will always be provided first where possible before a replacement is made. The Geek Squad agent who assists you will be able to apprise you of the available options.

I had this problem with The Blind Side from Redbox. It wouldn't play at all but would play in other players and computers. Just now we were watching The Tooth Fairy from Redbox and restarted it halfway through because one if the kids missed it. Now it keeps saying No Disc, even though it was just playing it a few minutes ago.

For anyone having problems reading discs that were once readable, I recommend a cleaner. It doesn't take much dust to obstruct the optics. Generally, I recommend the maxell 'wind tunnel' cleaner as it just blows the dust off the reader, but, for smokers brushes work better. I use the wind tunnel cleaner regularly since it does not touch the optics.

I did take the unit back to Best Buy a couple of weeks ago, but the Geek Squad tech was able to play both a Blu-ray and DVD w/o much issue and told me he couldn't find any problems. As I expressed earlier, this issue is intermittant and depends on the disc. We rented Tooth Fairy DVD from a Blockbuster Express kiosk today and it took us about 35-40 times of opening/ejecting to finally get the disc to play. We have often had other movies play, but once paused or stopped, refuse to load again with the No Disc error unless we repeat the load/eject process and finally get lucky. Meanwhile, the discs load fine on both my laptop and HD-DVD player. (yeah, I gambled on that format war and lost)
This unit is installed in my bedroom--hardly a dust haven. There is no tobacco use in my house, so having a laser that needs to be cleaned seems to be an excessive solution, but I guess I can try it. Is there a problem with blowing canned spray air into the unit? What method of cleaning the lens is recommended?

Unless there is excessive moisture in your room, go with the cleaner that just moves air over the optics. If your player is in the master bedroom and your wife takes long steamy showers in the adjacent bath, get a cleaner with a brush and consider a cover.

Hello jleroi,
If after you try the lens cleaner you are still experiencing reading issues, please take the player to the nearest store so a technician can assist you further on this.
Thank you,
