i just purchased avatar. having known that there would be a need for the new firmware update i instantly went to the website and looked up the updates for my model number. to my surprise the last available update is June 2009. This movie requires a newer update than that. i have been online searching everywhere i can for a newer update and have had no luck at all. so do i have a giant paperweight here????????? since i cannot get a new update this player will not be able to read newer versions so not what do i do with it? and so now i have to watch avatar in standard def on a 6 year old dvd player. good thing they box those together now or i would be even more annoyed.

Here is the problem.
The product (ns-bdlive01/ns-2brdvd) has been discontinued so there will be no more firmware updates.
Hollywood keeps changing the copy protection (drm) every 6 months so anyone who has a blu-ray player that is more than a year old without a firmware update will not be able to play blu-ray Avatar.
Everytime Hollywood changes the copy protection it gets cracked within hours, so it is 100% useless to avoid copying blu-ray.
Now almost everybody who has bought ANY blu-ray player before June 2009 and has not updated their firmware is COMPLETELY out of luck to be able to play blu-ray Avatar.
If you don't have a burnable disc with a computer or you don't know how to burn an ISO image file to a dvd/cd then you are completely out of luck.
Your only solution is to get another blu-ray player. Thank Hollywood, DRM, Congress, and the courts for that.

Welcome to Community@Insignia™!
Have you tried watching the movie, and if so do you have any problems with playback? We do not have any new firmware updates for your particular model. If you're experiencing any playback issues, they would not be due to firmware incompatability-you would need to seek technical repair assistance by calling 1-877-467-4289.
I have also addressed this with our team and they have tested the movie playback and works fine with your particular model player.

As a point of clarification, if a player is experiencing issues and does not have coverage; an alternative option is to seek technical assistance by calling 1-877-467-4289.

Actually it is a firmware issue, it's all over the internet. Avatar DRM requires the latest firmware and my NS-BDlive01 player plays other disks fine. So your telling us there will be no firmware update for this player and to contact tech support to waste money? How are products not supported when they were purchased only months ago?

I have tried watching the movie. It makes weird noices and tells me, on the screen, that my player requires an update to play this disc. It gives me the bluraydisc.com/forbestresults website. You go there and it gives you links to the needed firmware updates for many different brands. But guess what. Not mine. Meaning I should have bought the Samsung? Hopefully this means that not all newer movies will be a waste.

This is ridiculously absurd.
So am I understanding this correctly? The blue-ray player that I just purchased last week is incompatible with playing Avatar--one of the biggest movies of the past 10 years? There is absolutely no way to update my player to play the new discs that will be coming out over the upcoming months? This seems like a very bad business decision on the part of Insignia as this player is now an obsolete piece of equipment just like my VHS player. I suppose I shall be returning this product to the store tomorrow and purchasing a player that will do it's job.

Avatar has been tested in our Blu-ray players and will play without issue. No firmware update is required. We understand that the disk manufacturer has a marketing campaign to make purchasers aware that some players may require a firmware update to play this film, but we can assure you that your Insignia™ Blu-ray player is ready to play Avatar and other new releases.
However, if you are encountering difficulties, we have recommended previously that you contact our product support line. Alternatively, service options can be pursued through the place of purchase.
