Hey all, I see that I am only one of many to have some sort of post-update problem, but mine seems a bit different from the several others I have read here.
Since I bought this product during the big holiday push (and only because they had sold out of the Sony model I really wanted) I have been wary of trying the update. However, after several months of no problems with br-dvds, dvds, or netflix, I decided I would give it a go and see what the Netflix updates were like. I guess I figured that I insignia had earned my trust, but really I was gambling with a perfectly fine player.
I followed the update instructions exactly, but when the unit failed to reboot (it shut down and didn't come back), I tried to start it manually. Now the unit cannot finish startup. The lights begin to glow, the power button flashes in blue, holds, and the "Hello" greeting appears. Then the greeting disappears, the lights flash again, hold again, and "Hello" comes up. This continues for several cycles before the machine shuts itself down. All the while my television does not detect any imput.
Anybody with a similar problem? Anybody with advice?

Some of the machines have hardware that doesn't like the new firmware update. Your best bet is to take it to best buy and exchangel. I was told the techs couldn't do anything with it at the store to fix the problem. I have a rewards card so they looked up the info without me dealing with bringing in my own receipt.

***UPDATE***
I took the machine back to Best Buy. Guess what? There are no equivalent machines available in the same price range. For the nearest equivalent (ie. the cheapest BR machine with built-in wi-fi) was $50 more! The store was unwilling to make a swap.
I got my 100$ back, but I won't shop Best Buy or buy Insignia ever again. It is the stores fault for pushing the machine with full floor displays (and associate suggestions) and the company's fault for setting up faulty updates.
Elsewhere on this board a poster described himself as "paranoid" for thinking that the faulty update was designed to get people back in the store to spend more money. Paranoid? If so, it is contagious. I for one am convinced this is the case.

Re: "The paranoid might think that the real OEM (whoever makes these for BB, maybe LG or Samsung?) messed up the update on purpose in order to drive sales to their brand."
Ha. I thought you were paranoid when I first signed on this board with a similarly downed machine. Now I think you are right on the money!
I took my player back to Best Buy. They said they would be happy to exchange it, but there were no comparable players. The least expensive comparable player (ie. Blue-Ray with built-in Wi-fi) was 50 bucks more! The store was unwilling to make an even exchange.
The above poster has the right idea. Return, buy elsewhere, spread the word. It is Best Buy's fault for pushing a crappy product and Insignia's fault for pushing a faulty update. Sure, I got my 100$ back, but I feel screwed over. I'll never shop BB again, nor will I purchase an Insignia product again. I'm saying the same elsewhere on this board, on product review sites, and on Facebook.

That's rediculous. I bet if you ask for a manager, they'll get it right.
I would go back if it was under warranty and say
"Guess what, it's your problem not mine - it's under warranty so they need to have it fixed or exchanged. Or aks if they can get one from a different store sent to them for your exchange. (So what if they don't have it in stock. That's not supposed to be your problem.) If they can't get one from a different store say you want them to send yours in to the factory to be fixed or exchanged there if they can't get one from another store. That person sounds like they just don't care....but that is NOT how I've ever been dealt with at any time by anyone at the Best Buy where we live.
When I went in to exchange mine they said they would "have to send it in" because they can't fix it there....or they could exchange it. I took the exchange since they had TONS of them in stock.

Like the original poster (I've copied his scenario exactly) I followed the update instructions exactly, but when the unit failed to reboot (it shut down and didn't come back), I tried to start it manually. Now the unit cannot finish startup. The lights begin to glow, the power button flashes in blue, holds, and the "Hello" greeting appears. Then the greeting disappears, the lights flash again, hold again, and "Hello" comes up. This continues for several cycles before the machine shuts itself down. All the while my television does not detect any input.
Anyway, like the original poster my ns-wbrdvd2 worked fine until I did this upgrade. I had another ns-wbrdvd2 that has had a few upgrades with no problems.
I bought this blu ray player used, and I was delayed in trying it out as it was to be a gift for my sister (luckily I was planning to give her two, so she has one that does work).
So, my question is this, I don't want to spend my money paying for expensive repair fees due to an upgrade that went wrong. Can you tell me how to "reset" the blu ray player, so that I can try the upgrade again? Thanks.

Can you (anyone?) tell me how one can determine WHICH version of hardware one has? And do you know which version(s) of hardware have issues upgrading or which upgrade fine?
This information would be VERY helpful. I already bricked one unit upgrading, I'd like to avoid doing it again.
Thanks.

I'll look at my two wbrdvd2 players tonight to see if I can find anything (besides the date of production which I'll be sure to include).

Hello All,
If you are experiencing issues with the player not booting after a firmware update please do the following. Turn the player off, unplug any cables that are connected to it and let it sit without power for 30 minutes to 1 hour. After doing this plug it back in and turn it back on, at this point it should boot up properly.
If the player does not boot back up, then I would recommend returning the unit along with the receipt to the place of purchase to obtain warranty service. The NS-WBDVD2 has a 1 year warranty from the date of purchase and if you experience any issues obtain warranty service, please contact our service line so that we can help resolve your issue.
