Flex Elite MicroSD Card File Access

I have a problem accessing files on the MicroSD card in my Insignia NS-P16AT785HD Flex Elite tablet. I can dowload files and copy them to the MicroSD card, and I can copy files from the card to internal memory. I can not open any files that are stored on the MicroSD card. If I copy a file from the card to the internal memory, I can open it OK.

I unmounted the card and moved it to the computer and formatted it, then copied some known usable PDFs to the card. I still can not open files from the card. Again, if I move a file from the card to the main memory, I can open and read the PDF.

The MicroSD card obviously is a good card, since I can format and copy files to it on the computer, and move files to and from it with the Explorer app. The card also works OK in my Insignia Flex 8 tablet. I have the same problem using the card from the Flex 8 in the Flex Elite. The card in the Flex Elite and the Flex 8 are both a Transcend 300X 32gb cards

I am thinking this is a firmware problem since there are at least 2 other posts on this message board about similar MicroSD card problems with the Flex Elite. Is the manufacturer working on a firmware update or other fix for this problem?

Thank you!

Hello DaveM1785,

Welcome to Community@ Insignia™!

Have you tried to open the same exact files, from the same card, with the same app, on both tablets?

Do you know when this tablet was purchased? Do you still have the receipt?

Ryan

Re: Flex Elite MicroSD Card File Access

Hi, RyanR-INSG

Yes, I have the receipt. It was purchased 30 January 2016 at store #514. Is there a way I can contact you privately to provide more information?

And yes, I have tried opening the same files with the same apps on both tablets. What convinces me that this is a firmware issue rather than a defective card socket is the fact that I can copy files to and from the card with the pre-installed Explorer app, and that other file manager apps do not see the card.

Thank you!

Hello DaveM1785,

Thank you for responding!

At this point, the best option is to take the tablet into your local Best Buy with the receipt, to the Geek Squad counter, for warranty evaluation. They will be able to get eyes on it and see how it is acting.

Re: Flex Elite MicroSD Card File Access

Before I do that, i want to try one more thing. I just read a review at http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/insignia-flex-elite-7-85-opinions-t3158939  that suggests that the MicroSD card might be accessible only by stock (pre-installed) apps. Can you tell md how to reset the Flex Elite to factory setup? I know there is a hole on the side marked Reset but I don't know the procedure.

Thank you

Dave

Re: Flex Elite MicroSD Card File Access

Hello DaveM1785,

Thank you for responding!

Were you able to try this? Did you notice any difference in the apps that were capable of transferring files?

That reset button is just used to reboot the tablet if it freezes. Keep in mind though, if you are wanting to fully reset the tablet to factory settings, you will want to save all personal info and files off the tablet before you do this. Once you choose to factory reset the tablet all of the data and files will be wiped clean off the tablet and you will lose whatever is on it. To do a factory reset go to App > Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset > Reset tablet.

Re: Flex Elite MicroSD Card File Access

Hi, RyanR-INSG

No, I have not yet tried to reset to factory specs. I have tried a couple more file managers from Google Play and have not been able to get them to see the external MicroSD card. I did realize that I can open jpeg files using the factory installed file manager an Gallery app, but I can not open the jpeg files using an app from Google Play unless I first copy the file to internal memory. It looks to me like the external MicroSD card might be mounted at root instead of /mnt or /dev  or some other user accessible folder.

The reason I was thinking about doing a family tory reset was to get back to only factory installed apps. I can't remember if there were any factory installed apps that can open PDF files. I installed several while trying to figure out why I could not open PDFs. I have Uninstaller everything except Adobe Reader and Drive PDF Viewer, both of which will only open PDF files if I first copy them to internal memory.
