OK, danlshane, done and done, thanks to you. However, the original upgrade hosed my drive and my clean install would not activate. The tablet works in every way on WIN 10, with the drivers, but the activation nag would not go. I need the original 8.1 image from someone in the forum to proceed. I cannot install 8.1 from any other source since all I have are upgrade keys that I have not used on any machines.
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks Danlshane and others for their help. In my case the recovery drive wouldn't work -- Windows couldn't find the recovery volume.
I had picked this tablet up refurbished from CowBoom. After mounting the hidden recovery volume using diskpart, i found what looks like a non-standard recovery volume that contained just a folder with an install.wim ...
So after doing a clean install of Win8.1 I set that install.wim as the windows recovery volume (using recimg) and did a factory reset using Windows' built-in recovery program. Worked and I'm sitting on and activated Win8.1 with Bing again. Whew!

OK , I have come as far as installing 8.1 from scratch. Now I need help with the harder part. This is what I see when I list partition.
Partition 1 System 100 MB 1024MB
Partition 2 Reserved 128 MB 101 MB
Partition3 Primary 14 GB 229 MB
Where do I see the recovery image?
What commands do I issue next?
Any help is most appreciated.

Welcome to Community@ Insignia™!
What issue are you having with the tablet? You mentioned drivers but do you know which driver you are needing? Knowing what exact driver would allow us to see if its available.

So I bought one of these tablets on CL from a guy who hosed the install going to 10 and back to 8.
It's currently running 8, but with no drivers installed.
I bought it to experiment with, and would really like to install Android X86, KitKat probably.
I'm using a powered USB hub, keyboard Mouse connected.
I'm trying to get it to boot from USB to no avail.
When the tablet boots, when it should be finding the USB cdrom or a stick, I see all the lights go out on the hub and I'm back in Windows. I have never seen the USB cdrom in the bios, and only certain sticks.
I changed the boot order, and it still goes to windows. Like it loses the USB when the time comes to boot from it.
Tried Bartpe(stick), consoleOS(stick), AndroidX86 (Cdrom).
I see drivers here to make 8 work, but that ain't no fun.....
Is there some secure boot issue I need to address before booting from usb?

Your USB drive must be formatted Fat32 and bootable in UEFI format, not legacy MBR. Google USB UEFI to see how to do so.
I don't know of anyone who has successfully installed anything but Windows on this tablet. Linux might be possible, but Android is going to be a struggle.

OK, I have Androidx86 KitKat running LIVE now. I can't install, but it runs live nice. I would have to wack the GPT partitions.....
I still have 8 on it.
I have a couple of questions....
In win8 I installed all the drivers from the download in this thread.
I still have a couple of bangs in device mgr, two are uart devices. I have NO network interface on the tablet, no bt no wifi. The uart devices are probably the BT. Hopefully the wireless as well since there are no devices that could be otherwise.
I also see here on this site DL's from Insignia for Bluetooth install in 2 parts.
These are password protected though...
lspci & lsusb in android give me nothing useful
Are those 2 UART devices what I need?
