Since the specs are close, will Insignia allow a version of the new Chumby 8 software?

I am assuming it won't be allowed, but it will be able to be done.
Unless they lock down the Chumby8 like the Dash by Sony
I think a minor modified firmware file will find its way ont ousb sticks

The short answer is that, yes, you can install the updated firmware, but just
don't expect support from Insignia or Chumby after replacing the personality
of your device. If you're OK with self-support, it seems to work fine.
