Insignia Pilot 8GB NS-8V24 help!

I have the Insignia Pilot 8GB NS-8V24 and have had it for several years. I love it, and have had no trouble with it until lately.  It plays normally, and works fine. But for some reason, when I plug the USB in to the computer, it charges normally, but it does not open for me any more. Nothing opens.

It used to open like any other devise, and I would drag and drop new songs, or remove songs easily. Now nothing happens when it is plugged in (except the charging). Nothing opens so I cannot interact with it anymore.  I can't find the original box it came in so have no software disc.

I would say the computer doesn't recognize it, but I get no message that indicates anything at all - I simply get nothing - so I'm not sure that is the case. The devise also doesn't show up in "My Computer" as it did in the past, so I can't open it that way either.

I got a newer computer, but it still has an XP Operating System.

I read all the advise I could find on here, but didn't find anything that indicated the same issue I am having with my Pilot.

I took it to the geek squad at Best Buy. In order to be nice, I will not tell you how they totally didn't know anything about the Insignia (that I originally bought at their store) and that they virtually ended up saying oh well, too bad... why don't you buy a different one. Since none of them looked to be over 18, I just said no thanks and decided to try to talk to an expert here instead.

I really like this player so I really want to try to fix it. I haven't "erased" any internal or external memory on it because I am afraid I will lose what I do have...and at this point, I can't put anything on it all since it won't open, so I would have nothing if I did that.

Please help!

Hello JustSue,

I would suggest installing the software for the device which can be found here. If that does not resolve your issue then please let me know.

Re: Insignia Pilot 8GB NS-8V24 help!

Okay. Here is what I have done. I found my original box and the the original disc was in it. I reinstalled it...but after the installation, it still would not work.

So I went to download the file you directed me to - nusb31e.exe - and started the exe. It is incompatible with anything newer than windows 98, however, and I got that message.

I just don't get this. Is there something on the mp3 itself that might have been changed to cause it not to recognize my computer? Or maybe not open up on connection? Or something like that?

Re: Insignia Pilot 8GB NS-8V24 help!

Hello JustSue,

I would suggest performing a reset on the player (note: this will delete any files on the device and return it to factory settings) by pressing and holding the power button in the "On" position for 10 seconds. If you are still unable to get the device to communicate with your computer after a reset and installing the drivers, I would suggest that you take it to Geek Squad for further analysis. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Re: Insignia Pilot 8GB NS-8V24 help!

Okay. I really hate to do that because I will lose everything if it doesn't work, and at least right now it still works fine - I just can't update it all all...but I guess i have no choice. I'm really disapponted. Then, take it to the Geek Squad for further analysis? The Best Buy Geek Squad? They are the ones who told me to just buy a new mp3. They didn't even know what to do with the one I have. I mean I know my choices are totally limited, but if I have to buy a new one anyway I can't think of why I would buy it from Best Buy again.

One thing I did notice is that the MP3 end of the USB cable doesn't seem to go all the way in to the mp3 player. There is about a quarter of an inch of silver showing when I plug it in to the player, and I can't remember if that has always been the case or if it is something that may be causing this issue.

Thanks for the info. Please let me know if the cable end could be the issue.

Re: Insignia Pilot 8GB NS-8V24 help!

The USB does not go all the way in on my  NS-8V24 (and it is being recognized).

I'm sure you have tried different cables and the like.
