Any ideas, or is this hopeless?

OK - I think we solved own problem, so here's the solution in case it can help someone else. There are three steps.
1. Buy a component video cable for the Wii. We connected this to the "Component 2" input on the NS-L46X-10A. Once the component cable is connected to the Wii, an option appears on the Wii setup menu (Wii Options - Wii Settings - Screen - TV Resolution) for "EDTV or HDTV". Select this option.
2. Make sure the TV's "Game Mode" is turned on, which turns off the DCM. It also seems to help if all the other picture enhancement options under "Advanced Video" - Noise Reduction, Advanced Contrast & Advanced Light Control - are turned off.
Steps 1 and 2 take care of the video lag.
3. Run the audio connections from the Wii to an external amplifier instead of to the TV. This takes care of the audio lag.
My 17-year-old son confirms that everything works well now, and he's the Wii expert at our house!

I'm posting this just in case anyone else happens to fight with this for a while and the above steps didn't work right away.
If putting the TV into game mode didn't work, or only improved the problem a little bit, download the latest firmware for the NS-L46X-10A TV (September 2010 as of this posting). It will clear the delay problem right up when you turn on Game Mode and attempt to play the Wii.
