On my NS-L42x_10A I have white side panels on either side of the picture on some channels such as Life and LMN, aswell as others. On channels that are HD and take up the whole screen without any side panels, when a non HD commercial comes on the screen is smaller but the panels are black. I am attached to satellite and using HDMI cables. Thiis is not changed by changing the screen from wide to cinema, etc... "Auto" is not an option due to being set using HDMI. Is this normal? Can they be removed or blackened like the commerials on the HD channels?
Based on what you descrive, it sounds like the channels with bars on the sides are standard definition programming and that your TV is displaying them correctly.
